Pad eye testers developed by the Western Australian company Green Monster are being used in some of the world’s most rigorous industrial work environments, including offshore resources exploration and development.

The pad eye testers - which perform load testing of pad eyes, eyebolts, D rings and other lift points of plant being lifted or lowered - incorporate Enerpac RCH hollow pull cylinders actuated by P142 hand pump and gauge combinations for durability, simplicity and safety in challenging environments.

“When introduced, Green Monster’s PT Range of pad eye testers changed forever how inspection and certification authorities and offshore companies performed routine load testing of load points. Now they set the industry standard and are used internationally,” said Gus Costas, managing director of Green Monster, which is part of the AME Group.

Operating globally, the AME services and engineering group provides offshore solutions for owners and operators of fixed, floating and subsea operations of diverse clients including Apache, BHP Billiton, Maersk, Technip and Shell.

Green Monster set out to produce a pad eye tester of proven, robust design and construction, including Enerpac technology.

The RCH hollow plunger units incorporated into the PT range are designed to provide lightweight, versatile solutions for tensioning, testing and maintenance operations. Available in capacities from 13-95 tonnes, with strokes from 8-155 mm, the compact but powerful 700 bar cylinders used in the PT range are incorporated inside the unit’s main body for overall height minimisation, integrating into the unit’s one-piece weld-free construction of all components to optimise strength, durability and interchangeability.

Equipped with safety features for inverted operation, the PT series has integrated lift points and features a strong circular body to provide maximum flexibility to accommodate a large variety of pad eye shapes and mounting positions.

The single-acting, spring return Enerpac RCH cylinders incorporated into the PT series feature a hollow plunger design that allows for both pull and push forces. The cylinders are nickel plated with a baked enamel finish for durability, while a floating centre tube on models over 20 tonnes increases product life, says Enerpac Western Australia Territory Manager Andrew Marsh.

Green Monster’s cylinders are actuated by the Enerpac P142 hand pump. The pump has a compact design and availability in both single-speed types and two-speed designs that is claimed to reduce handle strokes by as much as 78% over single-speed pumps.
