A garbage truck has crushed a man to death in Koonwarra, South Gippsland.

It is believed that the 56-year-old driver was working alone when the incident occurred.

He had reportedly stepped out of the truck when it rolled forward and pinned him against a fence, killing him.

He was found at about 9.30 am on Wednesday morning.

WorkSafe Victoria is investigating the death.

The fatality brings the number of workplace deaths this year to nine, which is the same as at this time last year.
