WHS resources released ahead of National Safe Work Month

Safe Work Australia (SWA) has published new work health and safety (WHS) resources on the National Safe Work Month website, to help Australians prepare for October and this year’s theme: ‘WHS through COVID-19’. The resources include an information sheet with ideas for businesses on how to get involved in National Safe Work Month, a WHS best practice checklist, together with guidance on how to keep WHS a priority and COVID-19 case studies showcasing WHS best practice in a range of industries.

“I encourage employers, small businesses, duty holders and WHS representatives to go to the National Safe Work Month website — safeworkmonth.swa.gov.au — to download the resources and use and share them in their workplaces during October and beyond,” SWA Chief Executive Officer Michelle Baxter said. “More resources will also be published during October, including resources on managing risks to work-related mental health during the pandemic.”

To support the overarching theme of National Safe Work Month 2020, each week of October will focus on a WHS topic, including mental health and using data to create better WHS policy. Each topic will feature a downloadable poster and social media tiles, so users can promote them in their workplaces and networks. Employers and WHS representatives are also encouraged to use #safeworkmonth and #safetytogether when promoting their organisation’s National Safe Work Month initiatives on social media.

“This year’s National Safe Work Month campaign takes on extra significance as Australia deals with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the complex WHS challenges it presents, including risks to physical and mental health,” Baxter said. “The national campaign is a timely opportunity for workplaces to join in and demonstrate a strong commitment to WHS, foster a culture of safety and keep WHS a priority through COVID-19 and beyond.”
