SA releases more industry action plans

New industry action plans to reduce workplace injuries have been developed for a further four industries in South Australia.

The Transport, Manufacturing, Aged Care and Hospitals Industry Action Plans 2018–2020 address injuries, strategic outcomes, focus areas and SafeWork SA’s commitments to industry for 2018–2020.

They are aimed at reducing workplace injuries and improving overall work health and safety.

Among the 10-step actions are working more closely with industry to develop relationships and share knowledge; designing wellbeing programs focusing on shift work and fatigue, challenging behaviours; implementing a Youth Workers’ Strategy to guide young and inexperienced workers; and providing more specific education and advice on particular jobs within each industry.

“Every industry can benefit from taking a closer look at its approach to workplace safety, and SafeWork SA is committed to offering practical, hands-on support to keep workers safe,” said SafeWork SA Executive Director Martyn Campbell.

“These Industry Action Plans are a collaborative means of working with businesses and industry to improve health and safety outcomes. These plans identify who, how and where people are being injured most across these industries and what we will do to contribute to the reduction of workplace injuries across South Australia.

“By raising awareness and sharing experience and expertise, we can help workers take steps to stay safe.”

Workplace injury claims in these latest four industries have cost more than $80 million a year in 2014 to 2017. Average industry claims cost per year from 2014–2017:

  • Manufacturing: $39 million
  • Hospitals: $18 million
  • Aged Care: $13 million
  • Road Transport: $12 million

These four action plans complement those released last year by SafeWork SA for the agriculture, construction and hospitality sectors. The suite of action plans were developed following consultation with industry.
