Plant and equipment safety on cotton farms — new guide assists farmers

Every day, workplace health and safety is one of the most important, if not the most important parts of a working day. Ensuring workers return home unharmed each day is paramount. Safety on the farm is even more important as farmers are faced with many potential hazards that can affect their health and well-being on a daily basis.

Constant training and awareness around safety when operating plant and equipment will help minimise any injuries or deaths occurring on the farm. Knowledge around the operation of machinery, correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be worn and ability to operate machinery in a safe manner are all factors farmers should have thorough knowledge about.

In addition, the Chain of Responsibility (CoR) provisions within the road transport regulations require that each party involved in the loading, restraint and transport of loads, including cotton modules and round bales from farms to a cotton gin, share responsibility for transporting in a safe and compliant manner.

To assist cotton farmers with their safety procedures, the recently released Cotton Industry Guide to Safety 2020/21 by Pro-Visual Publishing in conjunction with the NSCA Foundation contains further information regarding plant and equipment safety, as well as other key safety issues pertinent to the industry.
