Worker fatalities reduced 49% since 2007

Safe Work Australia has released a new report detailing key work health and safety statistics.

The report explores the latest 2016 national statistics on work-related injury, disease and fatalities. It also looks at trends in work-related injury fatalities from 2003 to 2016 and shows how worker fatalities have reduced 49% since the peak in 2007.

Details are compiled using workers compensation data and data on worker fatalities sourced from jurisdictions, the National Coronial Information System and the media.

Some other points highlighted in the Key Work Health and Safety Statistics, Australia 2017 report include:

  • The agriculture, forestry and fishing industry has the highest rate of both worker fatalities and serious workers compensation claims.
  • 43% of serious injuries involve traumatic joint/ligament and muscle/tendon injury.
  • The median compensation paid for a serious claim is $10,800.
  • 92% of worker fatalities were men.
