Making Safety in the Lab Your First Priority

Safety in the laboratory is critical, everyday workers are faced with a variety of potential hazards, which include working with hazardous chemicals and toxic substances. These hazards can pose a significant risk to laboratory workers if they aren’t managed correctly. Workers need to also be aware of how to safely and correctly store laboratory chemicals to ensure uncontrolled reactions do not occur involving heat, fire, explosion and evolution of a toxic gas.

Chemical spills happen, knowing how to manage and clean up potential spills will contribute to a safer workplace. The cleanup of any chemical spill should only be done by knowledgeable and experienced personnel. Spill kits with instructions, absorbents, reactants and protective equipment should be readily available to clean up spills. It is important laboratory workers are constantly kept up-to-date with best practice methods of working with chemicals.

Information and guidance on safety when working in the Laboratory will help to ensure workers’ health and safety at work. With laboratory staff being essential workers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical that their safety comes first. The recently released Laboratory Industry Guide to Safety 2020/21 by Pro-Visual Publishing in conjunction with Science Industry Australia, the Australasian Laboratory Managers Association and the NSCA Foundation provides laboratory workers with critical information in the form of a 1m x 1m safety Guide which can be revised daily and used to assist with safety training and meetings.

The Guide features Augmented Reality (AR) capabilities, allowing the Guide to become digitally interactive. By downloading the free Pro-Vis AR app, workers can use their smart device to scan any AR capable content to access additional resources including videos and animations.
