ISO 45001 to be published in March

It has been announced that ISO 45001 is set to be published as early as 8 March.

ISO 45001 is an International Standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, with guidance for its use, to enable an organisation to proactively improve its OH&S performance in preventing injury and ill-health. The standard is designed to help organisations of all sizes and industries improve the health and safety of their employees through reducing risks and creating better working conditions.

The standard has evolved through a complex development process, with the first draft published in July 2014. After numerous iterations and hundreds of hours of deliberations among an international group of safety and health experts — which included Australian representatives — the standard has gained approval, with an overwhelming 93% voting in favour of publication.

The standard takes account of influential documents, such as the International Labour Organization's ILO-OSH Guidelines and various national occupational safety and health management system standards.

The voluntary Australian Standard 'AS/NZS 4801:2001, Occupational health and safety management systems — Specification with guidance for use' has not changed and remains a current publication.

A spokesperson from Standards Australia said that once the ISO 45001 has been published, Australian stakeholders will be able to submit a proposal for Australia to officially adopt it as an Australian Standard.
