Asbestos Awareness Week

Asbestos Awareness Week has now begun in Queensland and will run until 25 November.

The event is a great opportunity to raise awareness about working safely with asbestos.

Asbestos Awareness Ambassador Trevor Gillmeister and safety advocates Julie and Don Sager have teamed up in a short film to remind people why it is important to plan for any work carried out around materials that may contain asbestos.

Participants can also download or print out these posters to raise awareness in their workplace.

As a general rule, if a building was built or renovated before 1990, it is likely that it will have some asbestos-containing material. Those who are planning renovations, major maintenance or repairs should take precautions before starting work.

You can order resources that show the common locations of materials containing asbestos, what you can do to check if your home contains asbestos materials and how to prepare a plan if you decide to remove or disturb the asbestos. Share them with your friends, family, co-workers or neighbours that are considering renovating an older building.

Apprentice and supervisor safety forums will also be held during Asbestos Awareness Week.

If you are a tradesperson, manual arts student or supervisor with young apprentices, you are invited to attend asbestos safety forums where you will hear first-hand the impacts asbestos can have on families and why it is so important to look, check and prepare before starting work.
