Developer of the safety inspection app iAuditor, SafetyCulture is among the first developers in Australia to strap on the Samsung and LG smartwatches. The latest in wearable technology, these gadgets run on Google’s ‘Android Wear’ platform that was announced in June this year, at Google’s annual developer conference.

The company says its motivation to develop across these emerging devices is to ensure workers have safety management systems as a constant presence in their working lives, with the least possible interruption to their work.

Android wearables bring the reality of hands-free safety inspections closer.

According to the company, an obvious and practical application of smartwatches in workplace safety is with workers operating at heights. The ability to conduct an inspection on a smartwatch means the operator is free to use both hands to climb and assess material objects, and the device itself is not at risk of being dropped on unsuspecting workers below.

The company spokesperson adds, it’s easy to see how this will be just as beneficial to pilots conducting pre-flight safety checks, paramedics accessing treatment protocol and criteria based on patient symptoms, farmers assessing livestock, chemicals and machinery, and anyone who uses both hands to get their job done.
