NT gains Centre for Asphalt and Road Technologies

Monday, 23 March, 2026

Charles Darwin University (CDU) has announced the launch of a new road safety research hub in the Northern Territory.

Expanding on existing work carried out through the CDU’s pavement research program (commenced in 2024), the Centre for Asphalt and Road Technologies (CART) aims to deliver high-impact research, innovation and technical services in pavement and road technologies, all of which CDU said are in growing demand in the NT.

CART’s team will be led by Dr Ali Rajabipour, Senior Lecturer of Engineering at CDU, with its work spanning multiple elements of road research and development, which Rajabipour said helps drive industry collaboration and commercialisation of technology breakthroughs.

“Bringing this breadth of activity together requires a dedicated hub — one that can coordinate partnerships, streamline engagement with industry and government, and translate research into real-world outcomes for the NT,” Rajabipour said. “At its core, the Centre is about delivering better-quality roads that last longer and cost less to maintain.”
