Orbio-E is a cleanser technology based on irreversible electroporation, which kills bacterial cells and inactivates pathogenic viruses without using chemicals. It is supplied as ionatorEXP and ionatorHOM handheld spray devices.
When used as directed, the cleanser is claimed to kill the 2009 Pandemic H1N1 Influenza A virus and more than 99.9% of most harmful bacteria (E. coli, VRE, Salmonella, MRSA, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Listeria and E. coli O157:H7 on non-porous hard surfaces with a 6 s spray.
Electroporation uses a low-level, externally applied electrical field to temporarily disrupt cell membranes, allowing small molecules to pass directly into the cells. However, irreversible electroporation goes beyond the effects of typical, temporary cell poration. On hard surfaces, it disrupts and kills bacterial cells which may cause harmful infections.
Orbio-E uses only water and very small amounts of electrical energy to deliver antimicrobial performance.
Additional benefits of this technology include improved sustainability and reduced hazards from the potential misuse of chemical (cleaning) products.
Despite its harm to bacteria, it has no measurable detriment on skin and eyes, when ingested or inhaled, and, as such, carries no chemical-related warning label.
