Thursday, 07 July, 2011

SafeWork SA inspectors will travel to Roxby Downs in the state’s Far North today to investigate an incident which occurred underground yesterday afternoon at BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam mine.

The two SafeWork SA mining inspectors are expected to join BHP-Billiton investigators onsite tomorrow to determine the cause of the incident. Information received by the agency indicates that shortly after 2.30pm on Wednesday, a fire broke out in a drilling machine that was working approximately 480 metres underground. SafeWork SA was informed that six people working in the area were affected by smoke. They received a precautionary medical assessment and were later released. The area has been cordoned off and a full site investigation will be conducted.
