World Mental Health Day focuses on depression

Wednesday, 10 October, 2012

World Mental Health Day is today and the focus this year is on depression - among the most widespread of mental health conditions, but one which is not often discussed.

Around one in five Australians experiences mental health problems during their lives, but stigma still surrounds these conditions.

Dr Gerry Naughtin is chief executive of Mind Australia, a non-government provider of community mental health services in Victoria and South Australia

“One in five Australians will experience a mental health issue at some time in their lives. About 6% will experience a major depressive illness,” he said.

“The stigma around mental health still persists in the community. There’s a need to focus on opening up more about mental ill health and not be reluctant to ask for help.

“Depression is having a significant negative impact and cost on business. Employers need more support to upskill so they can manage these issues in the workforce.

“There are some very positive signs about ways we are dealing with depression and anxiety in the community but still one of the most neglected groups is older people with depression and anxiety. They often aren’t seeking help and we need more active engagement strategies with older people.

“Depression is a serious illness which is much more than feeling sad. A depressed person will have persistent feelings of being so low that they no longer enjoy the things they once did and cannot function as usual.

“Symptoms include loss of interest in life, feeling worthless or guilty, significant weight changes, sleeping too little or too much, a loss of interest in sex, feeling teary, afraid or perhaps irritable. At its worst, a person may be at risk of suicide. Depression responds well to treatment, which may include medication, counselling and exercise,” said Dr Naughtin.
