WorkSafe warns builders to lock up their sites
Builders should ensure their sites are well secured before shutting down over Christmas.
WorkSafe construction manager Allan Beacom said construction sites could be extremely dangerous to the public if not properly secured.
“Builders need to consider the risk their sites can pose and take appropriate measures,” he warned.
“We need builders to properly lock up their sites to prevent unauthorised people, especially children who might view a site as a potential playground, from gaining access.
“No one should have to deal with the trauma of an injury because a site wasn’t properly secure.”
Beacom said builders should also look at other safety measures to minimise risk, including adequate fencing, ensuring plant and equipment are protected, and chemicals and dangerous goods are appropriately stored.
“Pits and trenches could also pose a risk as they can fill with water so it is essential they are backfilled or securely covered,” he said.
“Builders need to also be mindful of strong winds that occasionally hit Melbourne, and must ensure uncompleted buildings and structures are well supported.
“Walls and roofs must be adequately braced until work is completed. Roofing and other building material that could be picked up by the wind must also be secured.”
