There are only a few days left to submit entries to the 2016 Good Design Awards, which recognise and celebrate best practice design and innovation across a broad range of industries in Australia.

Safe Work Australia is partnering with Good Design Australia to present the Safe Work Australia Award for Good Design as part of the award program, which it is hoped will help raise awareness of how good design can support work health and safety.

A focus on health and safety in design helps eliminate hazards and risks before they enter the workplace by improving the design of products, structures, equipment and substances, work processes and systems.

“Considering safety in design is important because well-designed work can prevent work-related deaths, injuries and illnesses,” said Safe Work Australia CEO Michelle Baxter.

“The most effective design process begins at the earliest opportunity during the conceptual and planning phases. Effective work design considers how work is performed, the physical working environment and the workers themselves.”

Dr Brandon Gien from Good Design Australia said the awards are about recognising the important role that design plays in taking innovative ideas and transforming them into commercially successful outcomes.

“We want to attract the very best in design and innovation and promote these examples to the world — inspiring others to adopt a design-led approach to the way they operate,” he said.

The Safe Work Australia Award for Good Design will be selected from finalists in the annual Good Design Awards and will be judged against specific criteria including safety in construction, use and maintenance, safety innovation and health and safety impact.

Categories encompass product, service, digital, communication, architectural and business model design and social innovation.

Online registrations close Friday, 15 April. Award winners will be announced on 27 May.
