Steam burn at smelter explosion

An incident at a blast furnace has left an employee injured and forced the plant to shut down.

A steam explosion occurred at Zinifex smelter at Port Pirie, South Australia, when molten slag came into contact with water. The explosion caused steam burns to an employee who was passing through the area at the time.

The employee was wearing full personal protective equipment and suffered minor burns to the wrist.

SafeWork SA has inspected a section of the smelter and has interviewed representatives of the company. The OHS regulator will investigate the incident further.
