ACT launches community OHS project

Wednesday, 08 October, 2008

The ACT government has launched the 'Health and Safety in the Community Sector' project, designed to provide targeted information on OHS issues and safety measures to workers in the community services and health sector throughout the state.

"The project will produce and distribute targeted resources to assist community organisations to implement safety measures in their workplaces and will assist them to understand their obligations when it comes to looking after their workforce," said Deputy Chief Minister Katie Gallagher.

"The project has been developed between the ACT Safety Commissioner and the ACT Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services and will deliver a series of free seminars on occupational health and safety compliance in community organisations.

"The project will also offer free inspections to some individual community organisations who volunteer to participate in the pilot and utilise the new community services safety kit in their workplaces."

The project will partner with peak bodies such as ACTCOSS, the Youth Coalition and National Disability Services (ACT), employers and unions in the ACT Community Sector to identify key OHS issues and compliance needs in the community sector.
