Hand protection for degreasers

Many degreasers are toxic, so Ansell advises that workers should make sure their hands are protected.

Oils and degreasers are a common sight in any industry where removal of oil and lubricants from metal parts forms part of its manufacturing or processing operations.

While most people understand that oil is a chemical that requires hand protection, it also needs to be recognised that many degreasing agents may be toxic and any contact with skin should be avoided.

Degreasers that remove lubricants and machine residues from components are chemicals that clean metal by washing dirt, grease and oil from surfaces. Oil-based degreasers are often toxic and may contain any of the thousands of dangerous chemicals found in traditional cleaners and degreasers.

More common chemicals used in degreasers include methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, toluene, glycol ethers and other fluorinated and chlorinated solvents. Even where non-toxic degreasers are used, degreasers mixed with the material removed from metals often contain hazardous chemicals and need to be treated the same way as any other toxic substance.

“Maintaining a positive grip on slippery components due to lubrication coating is also important in terms of safety and productivity,” said Ansell marketing manager David Nicholls. He said the AlphaTec 58 - 430/435 gloves incorporate Ansell Grip Technology to enable users to handle wet or oily objects with less grip force and more control. This combination of chemical resistance and grip, together with flexibility and dexterity, makes the glove suitable for working with chemicals.

“The grip technology ensures that the coating polymer does not penetrate the liner during manufacture. The coating is therefore consistent and sound, significantly reducing the likelihood of chemical leakage onto the skin,” Nicholls added.
