Icom has released IDAS (Icom Digital Advanced System), a series of digital land mobile radios.
IDAS is a digital land mobile radio system for business and industry using a jointly developed digital modulation and common air interface protocol.
It has been developed to meet the need for more efficient use of radio spectrum and consists of a complete radio system including handhelds, mobiles and repeaters that operate using an ultra-narrowband 6.25 kHz FDMA modulation.
FDMA also offers redundancy if there is an infrastructure failure ie, it will still be 6.25 kHz spectrum efficient even if a repeater fails.
The system has digital modulated clear voice, secure communication and 4800 bps data communication and retains compatibility with current analog FM systems. The series is capable of mixed mode operation in which the radio can receive analog FM and digital signals on a single channel.
The system principle is spectrum efficiency with the flexibility to allow the user to scale system migration to ultra-narrowband digital, while still running an existing analog system.
Other features include: individual/talk-group and all call; call alert; emergency call and alert; data call; message communication; remote stun/kill and revive; remote radio check; remote status polling; position data transmission; digital encryption; man down and lone worker features in digital mode (HH only); message communication.
An application developers kit will be provided to allow Icom distributors/OEMs to develop software to enhance, customise or expand on the basic system eg, AVL, full dispatch etc.
The radios are designed for factory, warehouse and hotel businesses and the construction, security and transport industries, etc. The company aims to help users replace existing analog FM systems and future-proof investment in their radio system.
