Australian Red Cross handheld CPR feedback device

Friday, 21 May, 2010 | Supplied by: Australian Red Cross

Australian Red Cross is launching a lifesaving device that provides real-time audio and visual assistance to a rescuer administering CPR.

The handheld device is placed on the patient’s chest and helps deliver more effective CPR in four ways: the unit reminds rescuers to call the ambulance, check airway, etc; cross hairs on the unit help ensure correct placement on the chest; a sensor helps ensure correct compression depth, with visual and audio prompts to “push harder” if required, or “good compressions”; and the metronome helps ensure the correct compression rate.

The unit is designed for infrequent rescuers, helping them provide more effective CPR and to have greater rescuer confidence prior to the arrival of paramedics.
