National Logistics Safety Code released

Friday, 20 March, 2009

The National Logistics Safety Code (NLSC) was released recently at the Australian Logistics Council’s (ALC) 7th Annual Forum, to demonstrate that the transport and logistics industry can lead the way to safer freight movement.

“The ALC is proud to have worked with industry to produce this single code,” said Hal Morris, ALC Chief Executive. “Complex regulation, often differing across state borders, is a major hindrance for the transport and logistics industry. This industry-based code will, for the first time, enable businesses in the supply chain to access a best practice, auditable framework setting out their responsibilities under road transport laws and OHS legislation.”

The NLSC is a single, comprehensive code for transport and logistics, designed to be flexible and adaptable for the needs of each individual business. The industry-based voluntary code provides minimum operational standards that meet the highest level of regulation impacting transport and logistics throughout Australia. It is independently audited by RABQSA and designed to be used as a condition of business.

“The NLSC applies to all players in the supply chain as safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Morris said.

The ALC welcomed the endorsement of the NLSC at the ALC Annual Forum by Nick Dimpoulos, Chief Executive of the National Transport Commission.

The NLSC has been developed by the ALC by the harmonisation of the Retail Logistics Supply Chain Code of Conduct with the Steel Code of Practice. Further industry codes are currently being assessed for inclusion in the NLSC.

The NLSC does not replace other industry codes, but is designed to work with them to strengthen safety compliance in the transport and logistics industry.
