ACT businesses to provide proof of insurance

Friday, 11 August, 2006

A new compliance initiative by ACT WorkCover will see more than 550 businesses receive a request in coming weeks to provide evidence of a valid workers compensation policy.

The initiative is part of the regulatory body's active program of monitoring compliance, as per the Workers Compensation Act 1951. The businesses will need to provide evidence their policies cover all employees and include a declaration on the total wages covered.

"ACT WorkCover records can identify if an employer has allowed a workers compensation insurance policy to lapse or has failed to declare to their workers compensation insurer the total actual wages paid to workers employed by them," ACT WorkCover commissioner, Erich Janssen said.

A breach of this requirement attracts a penalty, as does a failure to declare "actual wages" to the workers compensation insurer.

The 550 businesses will receive a letter requesting a Certificate of Currency and/or a declaration to clarify the circumstances.
