2008 SRCC Safety Awards

The Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (SRCC) held its 2008 Safety Awards on 23 October to reward and recognise excellence in workplace health and safety, rehabilitation and return to work achieved by individuals, companies and agencies operating within the Commonwealth OHS and workers compensation jurisdiction.

Les Taylor, SRCC chairman, said: “The awards continue to attract great support from Commonwealth government departments and agencies, as well as licensed self-insurers, with a record number of entries received this year. Furthermore, in the view of the judges, the overall quality of the entries has been extremely high.”

The winners were:

Category 1 - Leadership Awards for Injury Prevention and Management

  • Winner — Visionstream for ‘Leadership in injury management’
  • High Commendation — Centrelink — Call Network for ‘Leaders in injury prevention and management’

Category 2 - Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System

  • Winner — National Australia Bank for ‘starsafety’
  • High Commendation — Medicare Australia for ‘Our OHS management system’

Category 3 — Best Solution to an Identified Health and Safety Issue

  • Winner — John Holland, NSW Rail division for ‘Huck Gun trolley’
  • High Commendation — Australian air Express for ‘The New Age Cage ... from the bottom up’

Category 4 — Best Individual Contribution to Health and Safety

  • Winner — Jerome Gubbels, John Holland Group for ‘Best individual contribution to health and safety’
  • High Commendation — Lieut. Tracey Elliott, Department of Defence
  • Commendation — Paul Marlan, Australian air Express for ‘From the Stone Age to the Space Age in one giant step’

Category 5 — Rehabilitation and Return to Work Award

  • Winner — K&S Freighters for ‘K&S early intervention program’
  • Commendation — Department of Immigration and Citizenship for ‘Injury prevention and management plan’
