Mining and smelting complex implements pedestrian alert system

Seeking a practical solution for improving awareness around personnel working near heavy equipment, a northwest Queensland mining and smelting complex implemented pedestrian alert system (PAS). Designed to improve operator awareness, the RCT — Powered by Epiroc PAS was deployed across a range of equipment including forklifts, skid steer loaders, cranes and backhoes.

Using advanced camera intelligence to identify human-like forms without the need for wearable devices, the PAS features configurable detection zones that are able to be tailored to different applications, with escalating visual and audible alerts based on a person’s proximity to the machine. “The main reason for installing the PAS is to manage interactions between people and mobile equipment,” a site representative said.

“The system alerts operators when someone enters a 3 m exclusion zone, as required by our site procedures,” the representative added. The PAS was adapted to suit site operating conditions, RCT said, with external audio and visual alarms installed on selected machines to ensure alerts remain effective in high-noise environments. “The system has been adapted as we’ve learned what works best in our environment,” the representative said.
