A WorkSafe team is investigating an explosion at BOC Industrial Gases that occurred in the northern Melbourne suburb of Preston on 21 September in which a 45-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his face, stomach and hands.

It is understood the man was filling a bank of nine oxygen bottles used in the healthcare industry when the explosion happened. The valve and shoulder of an oxygen cylinder were blown off in the blast.

A workmate got the injured man into an emergency shower before ambulance officers arrived, stabilised him and took him to the Alfred Hospital.

WorkSafe Victoria currently has safety inspectors and investigators on site.
