Alcohol testing puts workers off

Friday, 13 January, 2006

A UK shipyard has sacked one worker and another is facing disciplinary action after testing positive for alcohol.

BAE Systems, introduced drug and alcohol tests at its Barrow yard in November to improve safety.

The prevalence of workers drinking before, and on the job, is becoming an increasing problem for some employers.

Since the testing's implementation, six people have taken breathalyser tests while on shift and four have failed them. Two workers have agreed to a program of support.

The test is the same as the breathalyser used by police to determine if a driver is over the drink drive limit.
