Tunnelling code of practice for NSW

Wednesday, 06 December, 2006

An industry-developed code of practice for tunnels under construction emphasises the need for cooperation and coordination between all parties involved in tunnelling projects.

WorkCover NSW said the 2006 Code of Practice: Tunnels Under Construction was developed with assistance from the Australian Workers Union, the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union, the Roads and Traffic Authority and the Tunnelling Society of Australia.

"The advisory committee was instrumental in identifying the key areas of risk in tunnel construction, as well as providing practical guidance for the assessment and control of the risks," WorkCover CEO, Jon Blackwell said.

The Code outlines the importance of continuing geological assessment and planning, the use of appropriate underground support systems, regular inspection programs and regular communication between all parties to ensure a safe work environment.

The code of practice is available at the WorkCover website.
