MSA Altair 4X high-speed, multigas detector

Monday, 13 December, 2010 | Supplied by: MSA Australia Pty Ltd

The Altair 4X high-speed, multigas detector is designed for use in confined spaces, mining, OGP and general industry.

The portable device uses X-cell high-speed sensors (<15 sec) and features a robust design with 20 m drop/impact testing. Other features include: IP67 waterproof rating; 24 h run time; man-down alarm to signal no movement, such as unconsciousness; instant alert panic alarm to signal ‘help needed’; data logging; tick mark to confirm function; triple alarm system (sound, vibration, visual); and AS/NZS and IEC certification.

Performance, especially speed and accuracy of detection are critical elements in any safety system reliant on gas detection. Tested against AS/NZS 60079.29.1:2008 and/or AS/NZS 4641:2007 standards, the company claims the detector’s Xcell sensors responded to reach 90% of the gas level applied at all levels in less than 7 s. The allowable tolerance is up to 60 s depending on gas type and can be even greater in some industrial instruments.

During testing for both long- and short-term exposures, the detector is claimed to be highly reliable and accurate, returning rapid and accurate readings, with the readings were well below the allowable 10% tolerance.

The detector is available in charcoal grey or Extreme Glow Lime (glow in the dark) reinforced body armour.
