Feedback sought on changes to NT electrical safety laws
The Northern Territory Government is modernising its electrical safety laws to keep Territorians safe from electrical safety risks and prevent property damage. The Electrical Safety Regulator within NT WorkSafe is seeking feedback from Territorians about the changes to the electrical safety laws.
The current laws relating to electrical safety are contained in three different Acts, ranging in age from 20 to 40 years old. The new laws will apply wherever electricity is used, including private residences, workplaces and public spaces, and to any person who could affect the electrical safety of others.
Consultation is now open on the new requirements included in the draft regulations. Some of the requirements include a new licensing framework for electrical contractors and workers and a requirement for homeowners to install safety switches starting from 1 July 2026. The draft regulations also include safety requirements for solar PV systems, battery storage systems and electric vehicle connection points. Community groups and not-for-profit organisations will also have a duty to manage electrical safety risks, under the draft regulations.
Territorians can register for one of the upcoming information sessions for the general public, hosted by NT WorkSafe. The information sessions will be taking place on the following dates:
- Tuesday, 7 May from 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm
- Wednesday, 15 May from 5:00 pm to 5:45 pm
- Thursday, 23 May from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm
- Monday, 27 May from 10:00 am to 10:45 am
