Worker fatally crushed between platform and roof

WorkSafe Victoria is investigating a workplace incident in which a contractor died after he was crushed between a steel roof beam and the basket of an elevating work platform at North Blackburn Shopping Centre.

It is understood the 25-year-old was operating the platform boom lift while in the basket at about 10.30 am on 10 August 2023 when it lifted to roof level, crushing him. He was taken to hospital but later died.

The death is the 39th confirmed workplace fatality for 2023. There were 43 work-related deaths at the same time last year.
