Work-related eye injuries cost Victoria $39 million a year

The Centre for Eye Research Australia has found that more than half of the people presenting to the emergency department for eye damage, caused by metal fragments, were not wearing eye safety glasses at the time of their accident. The injuries were commonly caused by high-velocity impact machining such as metal grinding, welding, repair work and drilling. Work-related eye injuries account for about 3,500 emergency presentations and cost the Victorian community $39 million each year. Read more »

Flight Centre caught in workplace bullying case

Australian travel agency Flight Centre is at the centre of a case of corporate workplace bullying, with Maurice Blackburn Lawyers filing action against the company in the Federal Court. Employment Law Principal Josh Bornstein said the action was filed under the Fair Work Act’s adverse action provisions - laws which play an important function in protecting whistleblowers from victimisation and retribution. Inadequate security involving explosives at mine sites

The Department of Mines and Petroleum, Government of Western Australia, has issued a safety alert following two recent incidents where explosive items were left unaccounted for in underground elevated work platforms and charge baskets at mine sites. The explosives were only discovered some time later, after the equipment returned to the surface. In one case, welding work was carried out on the machinery in very close proximity to the explosives (boosters and a detonator) before they were discovered. Read more »

Colorpak workers could begin protected industrial action over sick leave

Carton finishers in Melbourne’s south could soon begin protected industrial action in an effort to defend a key entitlement under threat by their management. AMWU Print Division organiser Tony Piccolo said negotiations on a new collective agreement at Colorpak’s Mt Waverly site had broken down over the issue of sick leave entitlements - traditionally paid out upon redundancy.
