Reducing falls in the workplace

Monday, 24 September, 2012

A simple slip, trip or fall at work can have major consequences, including the serious injury or death of a worker. To help workers understand and prevent falls, WorkCover NSW will hold a free webinar on Thursday 27 September from 11 am-12 noon.

General Manager of WorkCover’s Work Health and Safety Division John Watson said falls on the same level were one of the most common workplace injuries and the webinar would outline how businesses can easily reduce the risk of these incidents.

“During 2010-11 there were 14,720 claims for slips, trips and falls on the same level at a cost of more than $117 million to the NSW Workers Compensation Scheme,” Watson said.

“The average cost of these claims was $7965, demonstrating how big an impact a slip, trip or fall on the same level can have.

“The webinar will look at the requirements for managing falls on the same level in the workplace as well as work health and safety responsibilities, and how to identify and control risks.

“The webinar provides the opportunity for business and workers to ask questions and get advice from work health and safety experts in real-time.”

The webinar is part of WorkCover’s Focus on Industry program, which targets the 10 highest risk industries in NSW as well as the five most common injuries and illnesses within these industries.

As an added incentive, small business owners with 20 or less full-time employees may be eligible to claim a small business rebate of up to $500 towards the cost of purchasing and installing eligible safety equipment after attending the webinar.

All webinar participants must pre-register.
