Raising the bar on medical support in mining/remote areas

Wednesday, 31 July, 2013

It’s an on-going saga … mines and remote areas lacking the medical support needed to facilitate workers and inhabitants. The advisory council for the OHS Leaders Summit, which will be held in March next year, decided to create a discussion for the OHS leaders, to consider this negligence and what they can do to rectify the lack of healthcare available for miners and remote inhabitants. They have formulated a discussion on ‘Raising the bar for medical support to mining and remote areas’, in order to get the OHS leaders in attendance to assess the situation and discuss the best strategy to improve medical support in Australia’s mines and remote areas.

“Mining companies do understand that they need to address the lack of healthcare available in remote areas of Australia. The OHS leaders are going to discuss strategies and hopefully we can rectify this situation. It can’t go on the way it is, especially given there are companies out there that specialise in remote-area healthcare. The OHS leaders are fully aware and want change. It’s just about implementing the strategy which the OHS Leaders Summit aims to do,” said Larry Reaney, Director, OHS Leaders Summit.

The annual OHS Leaders Summit will be held from 4-6 March in the Sheraton Mirage Resort & Spa, Gold Coast. This event also gives senior safety leaders an opportunity to learn about the latest technology and service offerings along with understanding and exchanging ideas with their peers through targeted workshops and sessions.
